Take Out Talk: Fear as a Social Construct with Nouria Newman

Thursday, March 18, NOON PST

Widely viewed as one of the best kayakers on the planet, Nouria Newman has paddled some of the world’s most vicious rapids and waterfalls, won whitewater and slalom championships, and explored first descents on remote rivers. She completed her master’s thesis on how fear is socially constructed, and in a sport dominated by men, she’s broken down barriers for women in competitions and by advocating for equality.

Just a few short weeks ago Nouria added yet another “first” to her long list of accomplishments when she became the first person to ever run Pucuno falls in Ecuador. And not only did Nouria snag the first ever descent of Pucuno falls, she also became the first woman to ever run a hundred-plus foot waterfall.
